The Plant Of The Month

The Euphorbia pulcherrima was discovered by the first US ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, in the region around Taxco, Guerrero. Captivated by its beauty and red and green foliage, he sent the first cuttings back to his home in South Carolina for propagation and to be shared with botanical gardens and horticulturists. It is now associated with the Christmas season. December 12th is the anniversary of Poinsett's death and is recognized in the United States as Euphorbia pulcherrima day!

The Plant Of The Month

Poinsettias/Euphorbia pulcherrima

Three Facts

  1. The colorful parts of the poinsettia are often mistaken for flowers but are actually modified leaves. The actual flowers are the small, yellow structures at the center called cyathia.
  2. In the Mexican tradition, poinsettias are known as “Flores de Nochebuena” (Flowers of the Holy Night) and are associated with Christmas. A legend tells of a poor girl who offered weeds to Jesus, which miraculously transformed into vibrant poinsettias.
  3. Despite popular belief, poinsettias are not highly toxic to humans or pets. While they can cause mild irritation or an upset stomach if ingested, they are generally safe.

Poinsettias are one of the beloved holiday houseplants that bring festive color and charm to any indoor space. They can continue to thrive long after the season ends.
