August marks the end of summer. It stands at the threshold between the fullness of the season and the quiet invitation of the coming month. September days may still be warm and generous, but a shift begins to stir in the air—shorter evenings, cooler mornings, and a gentle slowdown in the garden. Vacations give way to routines, children return to classrooms, and we start to settle back into normalcy. In the garden, there is an abundant harvest. Tomatoes, herbs, and late blooms offer their final bounty from long hours of sunlight, while the soil begins to rest. It’s a time to gather what has ripened, savor the fruits of labor, and prepare gently for what’s next—mulching, dividing, saving seeds, and guiding outdoor plants to their indoor resting spaces where they will regain strength for another season. This month encourages us to look back with gratitude, honoring what flourished and even what faded, because both have shaped the year’s growth. As September begins, we remember that every ending carries within it the quiet promise of starting again—just as the garden rests only to bloom again next year!

What In The World Is Happening
Labor Day
(first Monday in September) – Honors workers and the labor movement; often seen as the symbolic end of summer. Just as plants shift energy inward at this time of year, Labor Day reminds us that rest is a part of productivity.

The First Day
of Fall
The autumn equinox occurs annually in the Northern Hemisphere, typically
September 22 or 23. It marks the official start of astronomical fall.

The Plairent House
As the season changes and the days get shorter, your houseplants naturally slow down. Reduce fertilizing, give one last light feeding, then let your plants rest. Too much fertilizer in the fall can stress their roots, while just enough helps them store energy for the winter ahead.
